Second degree burn injury

Second-degree burns affect both the outer-layer (epidermis) and the underlying layer of skin (superficial or deep dermis) causing redness, pain, swelling and clear blisters. The texture of the burn is moist and the burn injury takes about two to three weeks to deal.  These burns often affect sweat glands, and hair follicles and also can invite infections.

If a deep second-degree burn is not properly treated, swelling and decreased blood flow in the tissue can result in the burn becoming a third-degree burn.
